A resurgence of violent bigotry is the 20th century's defining characteristic. The Jews, Western society's prototypical outsider, have borne the brunt of this hatred. The roots of antisemitism date to the 12th century when the universality of Christianity, which emphasized its inclusiveness, was coupled with resentment toward those who chose to remain aloof from it. Merely being a Jew confined a person to a uniform category of outsiders. The psychological and social prejudices that medieval society adopted to exclude, and eventually persecute the Jews still operate today.
