The problem of formulating adequate feminist theory given the distorting androcentric nature of the analytic categories of the dominant discourses is discussed. It is argued that the attempt to produce a coherent conceptual form results in the instability of analytic categories as feminists revise their theoretical frameworks in response to the discovery of further androcentricisms in the concepts & categories they are using. Feminist criticisms of science & epistemology are analyzed to show how they create dilemmas by implicitly subverting the theoretical constructs within which the original questions were posed. It is argued that such "fruitful ambiguities" point to categories of Western thought that need destabilization, & that feminists should embrace the instabilities themselves as valuable resources for feminist thinking & practice. 30 References.
