- The alliance between the US and Japan began to deteriorate in Jan 1992. Japan values group loyalty, social homogeneity and hierarchy, while the US values individualism, diversity and equal opportunity. Domestic differences exist between the two countries, but on a global scale, both Japan and the US favor open trade and investment. The future of the relationship between the two countries depends on the international political climate and domestic policies.
