  • Narrated are events in the life of a professional social scientist who has had neither any lasting academic affiliation nor long-term institutional post. Among them are anthropological study at the City Coll of New York before WWII, wartime work in a mental hospital, & postwar fieldwork at a British "New Towns" site. The British experience proved professionally disillusioning as the inadequacy of anthropological theory for actual social purposes became evident. Described are various administrative posts held later in the National Science Foundation, the Brookings Instit, & the National Academy of Public Administration. The merits of anthropology vs those of other social sciences are distinguished: anthropology is not obsessed by doctrine & methodology as is sociology. Implied is a bureaucratic future for social scientists. D. Dunseath.
