  • The concept of life events is presented as integral to the study of life-span development. Definitional categories of life events are provided, distinguishing among biological, social, physical, & psychological events. Various event properties (eg, correlation with chronological age, probability of occurrence, extensiveness of occurrence) are also discussed, & a typology of events based on these properties is presented. The typology is then illustrated with actual life events & the related implications for anticipatory socialization & support systems are considered. Also illustrated in the event typology is the tendency of most investigators to focus on normative, predictable events, thereby neglecting other important event types. Thus, the typology serves to broaden the range of events under study & enhances the discovery of hidden or emerging events. 1 Table. AA.
