A discussion of classical Marxist categories & the dynamic character of modernity. Three primary aspects of Karl Marx's description of class struggle in the Communist Manifesto are redefined: (1) the notion of dichotomous social relations, here conceived as mutually constitutive social entities presupposing hierarchy & subordination; (2) social relationships operating independently of SC base; & (3) conflictual relationships also not based on SC (eg, that of master & journeyman). Max Weber's distinction between SE & political classes is preferred to their equation by Marx. A preliminary analysis of political classes is presented, focusing on the nonstructural aspects of class formation & reformation, & on the universalization of market relations & democratic goals in modern societies.
