An analysis of US existentialist sociology as a current manifestation of the phenomenological movement. Key US existential sociologists discussed include Jack Douglas & E. A Tiryakian. Most have been heavily influenced by the French existentialists Jean-Paul Sartre & Maurice Merleau-Ponty. By emphasizing the subjective emotional experience of alienated individuals undergoing physical pain or emotional hardship, existential sociologists focus on the irrational components of human behavior. Their research findings, based on participant observation & introspection, lack empirical & statistical data & cannot be integrated into any coherent theory.
