  • A study to correlate the relationship between political activism & Ss' location on the continuum of internal vs external control. In contrast to J. B. Rotter's, M. R. Seeman's, & S. Liberant's claim that Ss oriented toward internal control are more politically active ("Internal versus External Control of Reinforcements: A Major Variable in Behaviour Theory" in Decisions, Values, and Groups, Vol 2, Washburn, W. F. [Ed], New York: Pergamon, 1962, 473-516), it is argued that those oriented toward external control are more socially & politically active. From the viewpoint of value-expectancy, either hypothesis can be justified. The "power-formation" hypothesis is valid for those who are convinced that they are powerless (orientation toward external control) while the efficacy hypothesis holds true for those who see themselves as having at least some power (orientation toward internal control). A total of 31 studies since 1966 based on the ideas of Rotter et al are examined: 5 confirm the efficacy hypothesis & 4 confirm the power formation hypothesis, while 19 show no relationship between internal/external control & sociopolitical activism. Implications for further research are discussed. 1 Table, 1 Figure, 58 References. Modified HA.
