• Is the American middle class shrinking? We find that the middle has declined in the sense that the share of families with middle-class incomes fell from the early 1970s to the mid-1980s. Also, middle-class incomes fell during the period and have just recovered to the level of the early 1970s. A decline in real wages and salaries has been barely offset by the contribution of working wives to family incomes. We find some indications that erosions of earnings and middle-class incomes could continue into the future.
