Video data on chimpanzees in the Arnhem Zoo (Netherlands) show that a process of reconciliation brings them physically closer to each other after aggression than before, & that the 45 minutes following conflict are spent in gestures of rapproachment (extension of arm, embracing, kissing); cognitively, this requires no more than the capacities to recognize one another & to recall the conflict, both present in most species. Reduction of tension, mediation by third parties, opportunism, food sharing, & postconflict sexuality are discussed, & it is suggested that theoretical ramifications of reconciliation may include the origins of family among humans. 10 Figures, 32 References.
