• An outline of the development of the comparative method in sociology & cultural anthropology over the past twenty years. Two main themes in the literature on this method include: (1) its role in the social sciences; & (2) the possibilities & limitations of comparative designs & analysis. Generally, the main role of the comparative method is considered to be theory-building & estimating, but comparative theorists do not agree about the scope of the comparative approach. Some think that it is impossible to develop general theories of society on the basis of comparative research, while others argue for more moderate generalizations, ie, "middle-range" theories. The statistical & qualitative historical comparative approaches are contrasted. An important & relatively new development is the inclination toward comparative-historical approaches. Modified HA
