  • Fourth-year students in Slovene (Yugoslavia) secondary schools in 1976 (N = 2,805 Ms, 3,950 Fs) were followed up by mail questionnaire surveys for 9 years after graduation. A causal model was developed to test relationships between: educational origin, educational level of both parents, household income, cognitive abilities (using verbal, abstract, & spatial DAT subtests), scholastic achievement, academic standing of secondary school, & completion of U degree. The model was tested using the MILS program of R. Schoenberg's MILS -- A Computer Program to Estimate the Parameters of Multiple Indicator Linear Structural Models (Bethesda: National Instit of Health, 1985). The significant remaining residuals are attributed to the unsuitability of ability as a single explanatory factor. Recommendations are made for dealing with social inequality in schools. Differences in some estimates between boys & girls are explained by differential selectivity in the two samples & preferences for certain types of secondary schools by boys & girls during early adolescence. 2 Tables, 3 Figures, 43 References.
