An introduction to the functionalist-structuralist concepts of political systems within current US political science, based on three main sources: the theories of Talcott Parsons, systems theory in general, & comparative empirical studies of political systems. Structuralist-functionalist sociology looks at the political system as a subsystem of society that is functionally related to wider social & international environments. A political system is an open & adaptive one that obtains constant feedback on its effects on its environment. Depending on its input & output functions, the political system may foster or hamper society's capacity for learning & innovation. 31 References. Modified HA
