  • THE DESTRUCTION OF THE INSTITUTIONS OF THE SOVIET STATE AND THE DECOMPOSITION OF THE USSR HAVE CAUSED EUPHORIA IN ONE PART OF THE SOCIETY AND A FEELING OF PAIN AND DEFEAT IN ANOTHER PART, RESULTING IN INCREASED ALIENATION. THIS ARTICLE EXPLORES THESE COMPLICATED DYNAMICS, TOGETHER WITH AN OBVIOUS WEAKNESS OF NEW LEGISLATION AND AN AWKWARDNESS OF THE FIRST DEMOCRATIC PHENOMENA, WHICH HAVE LED TO DISAPPOINTMENT AND HAVE GIVEN A POWERFUL NEW IMPETUS TO WHAT APPEARS TO BE A RAPID ESCALATION--A VERTIABLE AVALANCHE--IN THE GROWTH OF RUSSIAN NATIONALISM. IT CONCLUDES THAT THE REVIVAL OF RUSSIAN NATIONALISM IS A REALITY OF CURRENT SOCIAL LIFE AND THAT A SOPHISTICATED POLICY, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT DIFFERENT TRENDS IN THE RUSSIAN NATIONALISM MOVEMENT, SHOULD BE ADOPTED FOR THEM.
