Examination of 2 generations of residents of Geneva, Switzerland, shows that both intra- & intergenerational mobility are quite high. The first generation (cohort I) consists of 1,086 fathers of students registered in Geneva schools from 1950 to 1980. Their declared income is measured at 5-year intervals throughout these 30 years of rapid development. The second generation (cohort II) consists of sons & daughters (N = 801) of cohort I. Their income is measured for 1980, when they were aged 37-38. Upward income mobility of the members of cohort I is considerable, but since the cost of living also increased from 1950 to 1980, a sizable proportion of this cohort still fell below the poverty line in old age. Comparison of the incomes of cohorts I & II shows a great deal of intergenerational income mobility. 9 Tables, 16 References. Modified HA
