  • There is considerable evidence to suggest that in recent yrs Amer's are voluntarily limiting fam size without limiting their rate of marriage or marrying at a relatively later age. The reduction of the reproduction rate in the US since 1963 has been associated with a shift from a reliance on coital methods of contraception such as condoms, douches, & vaginal diaphragms, to non-coital methods. Non-coital methods--oral contraception, intrauterine devices, vasectomy, & fallopian tube ligation--are more widely accepted & used today than ever before. Behavioral factors mentioned in the literature as considerations in the selection & use of non-coital contraceptive methods, & the nature & extent of problems associated with these methods, are reviewed. This review indicates the complexity & importance of behavioral factors in the choice, use, & continuation of non-coital methods of contraception. For each of the contraceptive methods covered, convenience & effectiveness in limiting fertility & the ability to separate coitus & contraception are primary considerations in their selection for use. Thus, selection of one of these methods is based largely on the desire of the individual or couples to limit--temporarily or permanently--fecundity, & at the same time maximize convenience & pleasurability of coitus. Yet, each of these methods is associated with adverse behavioral or psychiatric responses of varying degrees & over varying lengths of time, which to a certain extent, distinguish it from other methods. These responses can be attributed to physiological change in many instances, or with the termination or limitation of the biologic function of reproduction. Behavioral responses to these methods are many & varied, & to a large extent seem to be related to previous soc, cultural, or psychiatric history. The literature reviewed demonstrates behavioral responses to these methods can be predicted on the basis of soc & psychol'al factors, with far greater reliability than reliance on legal or soc sanctions or personal feelings of the MD.
