The village territory of Leimavo is atypical in the region, for the area devoted to the cultivation of dry crops is superior to that used for rice, & trees occupy an extremely important position. Densely populated, poor in rice, Leimavo seems destined to suffer particularly from overpop in a region which Is generally considered over-populated. However, its inhabitants, unlike those of other villages in the region, rarely travel to the exterior to make money. An attempt is made to demonstrate how the Ru landscape has been gradually modified by the interplay of demographic pressure & the limitation of water resources. These 2 forces, which should have combined to aggravate the situation, have led to the establishment of an original system of cultivation which normally permits the satisfaction of the modest needs of this Ru group which is attached to the soil. Major factors in this success have been the production of citrus fruits, esp oranges, & the adoption of relatively efficacious measures for the protection & fertilization of the soil. M. Duke.
