"Marital adjustment" is one of the most widely used and confused concepts in marriage and family research. This paper evaluates past definitions, operationalizations, measurements, and studies of marital adjustment. Many measures have been invalid and/or unreliable, it is suggested, due to a host of problems centering around socially desirable response sets, conventionality contamination, husband-wife differences in perceptions, unit of analysis, and use of ambiguous terms. In addition, newer scales have not accounted for the changing nature of marriage and family interaction. It is proposed that measures be applicable to unmarried persons living together performing family functions within kindred family structures. Scales need to distinguish between measures of dyadic functioning or individual adjustment to the dyad. A critique of past uses of the concept is followed by a newly proposed definition and suggestions for future use of the concept in marriage and family research. The paper suggests development of a new measure of marital adjustment and offers some guidelines for future research.
