  • THE COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION & READING HABITS OF 3 SAMPLES OF BLACK STUDENTS FROM THE SAME ALL-BLACK UR HIGH SCHOOL IN CHICAGO, ILL ARE DISCUSSED. DATA WERE COLLECTED FROM SEP 1968-TO-MAY 1969. DURING THIS TIME THE CITY WAS EXPERIENCING A 1 DAY PER WEEK BOYCOTT BY STUDENTS OF PREDOMINANTLY BLACK SCHOOLS FOCUSING ON 2 ISSUES: (1) THAT BLACK SCHOOLS SHOULD HAVE BLACK ADMINISTRATORS, & (2) THAT BLACK SCHOOLS SHOULD HAVE AFRO-AMERICAN HISTORY COURSES TAUGHT BY BLACK INSTRUCTORS. DIRECT OBSERVATION & FORMAL INTERVIEWING OF STUDENTS (N=159) TOOK PLACE. THE TOTAL SAMPLE WAS DIVIDED INTO 3 SUBSAMPLES OF MILITANT, AFRO-AMERICAN HISTORY CLUB, & NONRACE GROUPS. R'S SELF-REPORTS SHOW THAT STUDENTS IN RACE FOCUSED SCHOOL ORGANIZATIONS ARE FREQUENTLY IN CONTACT WITH RACE CONSCIOUS ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL. THE DATA ARE INTERPRETED IN LIGHT OF THE COMMON ASSUMPTION IN POLITICALIZATION LITERATURE THAT SCHOOLS & PARENTS MAKE THE ONLY SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO POLITICAL ACTIVISM AMONG ADOLESCENTS. 5 TABLES.
