  • Data were derived from the "advice to the lovelorn" columns in East African magazines. The interrelationship of 2 normative systems, viewed through sexual mores, is analyzed. A conflict between almost Victorian moral values inherited by the culturally assimilated natives from the white colonizers & the modern moral trends ruling the young (also transmitted from the West) is said to exist. The problem of sex occupies an important position in both Christian teaching & the traditional religions. The subjects dealt with in the correspondence include conflict between the norms of the European & native cultures, sexual mores, & marriage prospects. The persistence of magical beliefs even among the better educated correspondents is noted. The abolition of the traditional system leads to a period of acculturation in which values are in a state of flux, creating a feeble agglomeration. Parallels to the present cultural ambiguity in Africa are sought in the examples of Ireland in St. Patrick's time, & Poland in the era of St. Wojciech. S. Karganovic.
