The Limitation of Strategies and the Incompatibility of Desires] Frankfurt am Main, 1976). Women's activity in housework should not be viewed as unproductive, given the broad concept of production within Marx's thought. Restricting production to commodity production gives a false perspective. Women play a major role in producing social relations & 'immaterial products', typified by the mother-child relation. Women's production is need-oriented & communicative in its basic character. Achievement even in academic & other work is often motivated by the desire for love & approval. This is often conceived in terms of lower ego strength; however, this use of M criteria of ego strength is in some degree a distortion. Housework is necessary labor, motivated by this need for love & approval; it consumes a large part of women's time, especially caring for children. Women also play a major role in regenerating men for continued work. This maintenance of everyday life is the essential productive role imposed on women in present society, a role which both represses them & provides social possibilities not present in commodity production.
