Beschreibungen/Notizen
Rapid growth is characteristic of many areas in Calif. Orange County, south of Los Angeles, is the fastest growing county in the US. The advent & growth of community Colls in the area has made the Coast Community Coll District the third largest in the country, serving over 120,000 students. The district has two campuses; Orange Coast Coll & Golden West Coll along with Coastline Community Coll, a "college beyond the campus." Coastline has no land or buildings other than administrative offices; classroom space is leased or borrowed. Approximately 33% of district residents over nineteen years of age were taking courses at one of the three Colls, representing the highest per capita use of any higher education program in the world. The average age of matriculants is 31.27. Vocational courses make up 59% of the 2,464-course curriculum. In addition to the success of the conventional community Coll system the district emphasizes telecommunications -- TV as a educational medium. The Coast Colls are an avant-garde example of academic enterprise, given their varied student body, diverse faculty, & "corporate approach" to education. Although not without critics who question the massive operation, many believe the system responds to the needs of society. N. Jahnke.
