• A short outline of the history of Makerere U & its main problems up to the 1970s. The problems at Makerere illustrate a larger one -- that of African self-identification in the modern world. As a result of the policy of decolonization for the U in the 1960s, Ugandanization & Africanization overlapped: on the Ugandan academic staff were many members of Asian & some of European origin who opted for Ugandan citizenship, & the African staff included many non-Ugandans. The white members of the staff imposed on Makerere the West European notion of the U consisting of purely cognitive & national (practical) elements, while the Ugandan intellectuals were more attentive to training in skills. The philosophical frame of reference of the Ugandans was not the value of knowledge, but the value of African socialism. Modified HA.
