  • The development of mass communication as a field of study in Germany is traced from 1916 to the present. Changes from Zeitungswissenschaft to Kommunikationswissenschaft are noted, & the relationship with other disciplines, sociology in particular, is described. References are made to Max Weber & Ferdinant Tonnies & their interests in studying the press (Following the article is a translation of Weber's 1910 speech to the German Sociological Association concerning the study of the press.). The emergence of a "critical" approach to the field during the 1960's as thought to be a counter-movement to the post-war establishment of Publizistikwissenschaft. The existence of several philosophies of mass communication among German university institutes is considered to be a stimulus for the continuing debate concerning the position of the field at the university level, & also as a source of knowledge for mass communication practicioners & society in general.
