Explores the political debate surrounding the concept of totalitarianism & provides a lengthy analysis of Hannah Arendt's The Origins of Totalitarianism (1951). Distinctions of the term include its application to capitalism & democracy, ie, "totalitarian democracy," & these complications have contributed to the term's mysticism. Arendt's initial & revised commentary, particularly the analysis of imperialism, is discussed, & the onset of the Cold War is deemed imperative to a contemporary understanding of totalitarianism. Arendt's deductivist approach & tendency to reference the USSR & Nazi Germany are criticized for its exclusion of many other 20th-century atrocities, namely concentration camps & massacres in additional countries. The label of totalitarianism is frequently improperly applied as a general deduction, rather than as a result of identifying particular characteristics, & the term has frequently reemerged in recent denunciations of Islam. 56 References.
