  • Public opinion in the West was in large measure hostile to the Second Iraq War. No doubt several competing issues swayed public opinion: hostility to war in general, & fear of civilian casualties; solidarity with Islamic states on the part of Muslims in Europe; suspicion or hostility to America's ruthless pursuit of self-interest in foreign policy; the belief that America was determined on a course of war resulting from the build-up of its forces in the Middle East; finally &, perhaps, crucially, the case that Iraq posed a credible threat to the West because of its secret possession of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) was unproven. Many Churchmen were among the leading critics of what was seen as an excessively rapid recourse to war, & appealed to Christian Just War theory to set moral guidelines against which the decision to declare war might be viewed. This article considers the extent to which it is possible to reconcile Christian Just War theory, or its most recent interpretations (on the recourse to war, on that which is just within war, & on creating a just peace after war), with the circumstances of the Second Iraq War. It concludes that the doctrine of preemption is difficult to reconcile with the Christian Just War principles of right intention & last resort. Adapted from the source document.
