  • Analyzes the income gap between the sizable ethnic minority populations in the People's Republic of China & the majority Chinese. The question of why there is such a large minority-majority income gap in the first place & why that income gap has widened is explored. Background information on the various ethnic minorities in China & the most ethnically populated regions is provided with a brief discussion of the policies that affect them. Survey data gathered in 1988 & 1995 indicate average household income & income inequalities, & a look is given to the estimated income functions for 1988 & 1995. Using those functions as a basis, the minority-majority income gap is decomposed. Focus turns to the Guizhou & Yunnan provinces to answer why minorities in those provinces have fared better than minority populations in the rest of rural China. The minority-majority income gap increased substantially, & the driving force behind inequality is seen as the geographical location of the minorities away from the majority in rural China, a finding reinforced by the subsample of the Guizhou & Yunnan provinces. 6 Tables, 19 References.
