  • The present experiment investigated the influence of approach & avoidance motor actions on evaluations of the Freie Demokratische Partei (FDP -- German Liberal Democratic Party). Participants were required to either flex their arms (arm flexor contraction), to extend their arms (arm extensor contraction), or to leave them in their lap (control group), while they watched a 5-minute excerpt from a television documentary about the FDP. Previous research on bodily feedback (Cacioppo, Priester, & Berntson, 1993) has provided evidence associating arm flexion with approach behavior & arm extension with avoidance behavior, & demonstrated that these strategic inclinations have an effect on judgment. The findings of the present study show that participants in an arm flexion condition (induced approach behavior) consider the FDP a nicer & more competent political party than participants in an arm extension condition (induced avoidance behavior). Furthermore, approach behavior participants give a better election prognosis for the FDP than avoidance behavior participants. The current results are discussed in relation to bodily feedback theories, & the implications for advertising & media psychology are outlined. 1 Table, 38 References.
