An examination of certain aspects of Ur'ization of 'black' Africa, ie Africa South of the Sahara. With few exceptions (Kano, Ougadougou), the towns of black Africa are of colonial, not indigenous origin. Ur pop is usually a conglomerate of pop's of diverse ethnical origins. The process of Ur'izing this pop varies not only from city to city but from ethnic group to ethnic group within the city. Strong conservative tendencies hamper Ur'ization, particularly fam & tribal links with Ru areas & the instability of Ur pop. However, Ur'ization is making progress. It expresses itself in such phenomena as the impoverishment of ritual, eg marriage rites, the search for Ur forms of status & prestige, & a certain degree of anomie. In spite of the persistence of conservative forces, the processes of modernization are 'inescapable' & will, sooner or later, oroduce a stabilized Ur non. I. Langnas.
