  • The pioneers of small group (SG) res (Cooley, Simmel) had no means for empirical study. When sociol became an empirical sci, the SG was initially forgotten. Today the SG stands in the focus of sociol'al res. 2 sets of problems can be distinguished: (a) how does the SG stand between the individual & society, this problem is studied in industrial & pol'al sociol; (b) what happens within the SG. The main questions are: under what conditions is conformity (degrees thereof) generated; what is group cohesion & how can it be measured; how does differentiation within the group arise; under what conditions does the group work best. Most of the res is done in the US & by Americans. Studies from other cultures (India, Turkey) do not corroborate the American results. This may be due to diff exp'al conditions, but it is not improbable that the SG does not play the same role in these societies, & that the US results are, are the consequence of the strong conformist tendencies in US society.
