  • An examination of the SofK of K. Mannheim, with special reference to his IDEOLOGY AND UTOPIA Mannheim is viewed, together with M. Scheler, as the founder of modern SofK. Mannheim viewed SofK as seinsverbunden (connected with the whole of life). His chief contributions to it are the article 'Wissenssoziologie' (Sociology of Knowledge) in A. Vierkandt's sociol'al dictionary & (IDEOLOGIE UND UTOPIE [Ideology and Utopia], first Ed, Bonn, Germany, 1929). The contributions of his precursors are reviewed in detail: Plato ('ideas'); F. Bacon (the 'idols'); A. Destutt de Tracy ('ideologies'); A. Comte (development of forms of consciousness); K. Marx & F. Engels (true & false consciousness, also base & superstructure); M. Weber ('ideal types'); F. Nietzsche (ideas of good & evil); S. Freud (id, ego & superego); V. Pareto ('residues') & M. Scheler (philosophical approach, based on E. Husserl's phenomenology). Critiques of IDEOLOGY AND UTOPIA by J. J. Maquet (in his SOCIOLOGIE DE LA CONNAISSANCE, Sociology of Knowledge, Louvain, Belgium, 1949) & P. Kahn ('Ideologie et Sociologic de la Connaissance,' Ideology and Sociology of Knowledge, in Cahiers Internationaux de Sociologie, 1950, are reviewed. The terms 'ideology' & 'utopia,' as used by Mannheim, are analyzed. It is concluded that Mannheim's SofK was powerfully influenced by Marxism & German historicism & that it was bound to develop into a sociol'al history of the human spirit. I. Langnas.
