Einleitung (General introduction)-discusses the yrs between 1789 & 1848 as an important period for the formation of socialist ideas & concepts & places the authors & sources presented here in an historical & soc context. (1) Franzoesische Revolution and Babouvistischer Kommunismus (The French Revolution and Babouvist Communism)-discusses the French Revolution as a source of inspiration & presents texts by Babeuf, Marechal, & Buonarroti. (2) Saint-Simon and die Saint- Simonisten (Saint-Simon and the Saint-Simonianists)- describes the life & work of Henri de Saint-Simon & the activities of the Saint-Simonists, & offers 5 texts by Saint-Simon. (3) Charles Fourier and die Sozietaere Schule in Frankreich (Charles Fourier and the Societarian School in France)-considers the life & ideas of Charles Fourier, Victor Considerant, & Hippolyte Renaud & provides texts by each. (4) Religioeser Sozialismus (Religious Socialism)-introduces the thought of Felicite de Lamenais, Pierre Leroux & Jean Reynaud & provides examples of their writings. (5) Reformer and Revolutionaere vor 1848 (Reformers and Revolutionaries Before 1848)-discusses Richard Lahautiere, Etienne Cabet, Theodore Dezamy, & Louis Blanc, with texts by each. (6) Fruehe Sozialisten in England (Early Socialists in England)-provides biographical sketches of Robert Owen, John Gray & William Thompson, & presents texts by each of them as well as by an Owen-disciple who used the pseudonym 'Ethnicus.' (7) Fourierismus in Deutschland (Fourierism in Germany)-introduces Christoph Friedrich Grieb & Franz Stromeyer, & offers one text by each. (8) Wilhelm Weitling and August Becker (Wilheim Weitling and August Becker)-introduces these 2 early German socialists & presents a paper on 'What is Communism?' by Weitling, an anonymous text entitled 'Paris in the Year 2,000 and Then?' & Becker's 'Our Concern is not a German but a Human One.' (9) Die Wahren Sozialisten (The True Socialists)-deals with Karl Gruen, Moses Hess, Hermann Puettman, & Fr. Schmidt (an apparent pseudonym), all considered representative of the beginning of true socialism (as compared with early socialism). 2 texts each by Gruen & Hess & 1 each of Puettmann & Schmidt are presented.
