  • The results of sociol'al field res, carried out among 3 patrilinear tribes of Northern Ghana (Dagomba, Kassena-Nankani & Kusasi) are presented. The tribes have diff pol'al systems. The Dagomba form a tribal state with a feudal hierarchy of hereditary chieftaincies; the other 2 have segmentary & clan systems. Their common feature is land tenure, in which the land belongs to the ancestor of the clan but is used by all those who descend from him. Res among the Dagomba centered around the village of Cheshey & the hamlet of Zuozugo. Here traditional authority enjoys high prestige & the existence of the state of Ghana is only of marginal importance. Res among the Kasena-Nankani was carried out in the village of Nayagynia with a pop composed of Catholics & animists. There is a Sch (illiteracy is only 30%) & a water supply for part of the village. Field work among the Kusasi was carried out in the village of Bugri. The pop is Catholic, Muslin & animist. In spite of the existence of a Sch, the illiteracy rate is 85%. It is, however, econ'ly more advanced, with the use of tractors & the marketing of produce. It is concluded that SE development, even when accompanied by departure from animism, leaves the basic values of land & ancestors untouched; it is suggested that feudal-type pol'al systems may resist change more effectively than loose, segmentarv ones.
