  • Two groups of emotions are important in interactions in the military: entropic & stimulating. Entropic emotions are caused by the possibility of losing one's life in war, or of killing other people. If not managed properly, these emotions can lead to psychological stress & posttraumatic stress disorder. Military organization has to ritualize the expression of emotions of both types to lessen disorder, panic, & psychological casualities. Stimulating emotions are developed to achieve unit cohesion, readiness for training, & the will to fight. The institutional emotions are the most desired in the military, but in some specific situations, impulsive emotions are acceptable, eg, those leading to heroic acts. Modern military organizations are facing the loss of traditional, institutional characteristics, & the entrance of postmodern values, eg, individualization of behavior & free, more impulsive expression of emotions. The rituals to express the emotions are consequently more lax, modest, even absurd. Commanders are supposed to work with emotions in order to motivate soldiers. 24 References.
