  • This 7th Vol - in V Parts & 11 Chpts - in the series Research in the Sociol of Work under the direction of Pierre Naville is a study of non-executive workers (who with their families constitute 67% of the French pop), to analyze the present situation & past developments in the soc world of Lc & Me workers. Traditional data concerning the division of French employees into manual & non-manual workers is presented, & the importance of this widely-accepted contrast is denied: it masks the complexity of the effective divisions of the working group & it overlooks the rapport that exists between these divisions & the larger society. I - THE DEVELOPMENT OF IDEAS AND THEORIES CONCERNING THE PLACE OF WORKERS IN SOCIETY - contains Chpt (1) The Viewpoint of Various Writers in the Nineteenth Century, (2) From 1900 to World War II, (3) The Present Period, & (4) The Development of Ideas Concerning the Fringes of the Working Classes as Reflected in Statistical Classifications: The Case of the United States from 1790 to the Present. These Chpts examine the evolution of thought regarding the distinction between manual & clerical workers from the industrial revolution to the present day. K. Marx, Proudhon, Adam Smith, Balzac, & Lenin are prominent among those cited. Changes in popular opinion are considered. II - SOME STATISTICAL OBSERVATIONS ON SOCIAL CLASS ACCORDING TO LEVEL OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT - contains (5) The Geographic Distribution of Social Classes Through the World - reviewing the size & characteristics of the Wc's in various countries. III - OCCUPATIONAL STRUCTURE - contains (6) Duties, Functions, and Hierarchical Position, (7) The Work Situation: Shops and Offices, & (8) Amount of Work and Salary. The validity of the manual vs non-manual division is inspected with regard to tasks performed, form & amount of income, status position, working environment, length of working week & year, & a few norms & values. IV - PLACES OF RESIDENCE - presents (9) The Separation of Working Classes into Residential Sectors, & (10) Detailed Examination of the Sociological Divisions of a Metropolis and Indications of Change: The Case of Geneva. Here, the segregation into proletarian & bourgeois quarters furnishes information about soc affinities & styles of life. White collar workers are not as separate residentially as they are on the job. Modern cities are a mosaic lacking the anticipated bipartite division. V - CONCLUSION - contains (11) Final Remarks - where it is asserted that the white collar-blue collar distinction is an oversimplification of the facts. Index of authors (but not of subjects), 17 tables, 6 figures. R Thomlinson.
