Beschreibungen/Notizen
  • Using economic theories of pressure groups & rent seeking, the article analyzes the changes in the social structure of postindependence India. Government plays a large role in the economy & has affected India's social evolution as well. Therefore, the same social structure of caste & tribal loyalties has been maintained rather then diminished. Culture has also influenced the economy & politics. In this case, pressure groups that existed in India at independence have decreased the development of other traditional groups that occur in other democracies. To substantiate these conclusions, the article presents a theory of the determinants of pressure formation & reviews India's history. It shows how some events that cannot be explained by traditional theory are explained by the pressure group theory. 5 Tables, 1 Figure. R. Larsen
