Staatliche Gewalt in der Moderne ([The Presence of War. State Violence in the Modern Age] Frankfurt A.M.: Fischer, 2000); & (3) Hans Joas, Kriege und Werte. Studien zur Gewaltgeschichte des 20 Jahrhunderts ([Wars and Values. Study on the History of Violence in the 20th Century] Weilerswist: Velbruck Wissenschaft, 2000). Kaldor's interpretation of organized violence leads her to talk about differences between old (territorial) & new (regional) wars, the cause of which she finds to be globalization, its effects on the state monopoly on power, & the regional characteristics of war -- identity, religion, culture. Knobel's book, which deals with the present through an interpretation of the consequences of past wars, finds the cause for war in the inability of politics to pursue its goals peacefully. Joas's book has the most original theory in that it explains the dynamic of violence of nonstate actors in a fruitful way. 74 References. S. Schlieszler
