  • A review essay on a book edited by Klaus J. Hopt, Hideki Kanda, Mark J. Roe, Eddy Wymeersch, & Stefan Prigge, Comparative Corporate Governance: The State of the Art and Emerging Research (1998). This work presents itself as representing the "state of the art" in theoretical & empirical scholarship on comparative corporate governance. Here, its most important themes are reviewed, highlighting analyses of how shifts in the world economic structure & political-economic developments have impacted corporate governance. Issues of labor relations & codetermination are addressed, including several perspectives on the relationship between labor peace & labor incorporation. Of particular note is the ascendance of US models of economic & sociolegal thinking & the persistence of neoliberal ideology, neoclassical economic ideals, & empirical social science research on this topic. Profuse examples from various countries demonstrate the increased interaction of domestic, regional, & international political economic forces in corporate governance. K. Hyatt Stewart
