Russian conscripts' (N = 155) views on military draft & attitudes toward the military were surveyed, revealing a contradiction in their objection to the draft on the grounds of personal safety, discomfort, & economic losses, but support of it as an opportunity for personal development & professional education. Outright negative attitudes toward service in the army were rare, as most respondents recognized its benefits, especially in the area of physical & mental training. Predraft training is viewed as desirable by many respondents, but views on the benefits of personal participation in various forms of introduction to the military during their school education were split. Most respondents felt that service in the army would improve their chances of future employment, & were able to identify the specific character attributes conducive to professional life they would acquire during military service. On the other hand, many respondents pointed out the failure of military training to offer them education & qualification necessary for finding a job in the present era of technological revolution. Z.
