  • A study concerned with a change in a child-rearing practice by a small group of mothers. The purpose was to contrast mothers who changed with those who did not, and bring out the relevant variables responsible for the change. The innovation studied, part of a current cultural change toward permissiveness in child-rearing, was the lenient or permissive behavior by mothers in handling food refusals of children. 57 mothers were selected from the records of those attending the Child Health Stations by the following criteria: mothers faced with a feeding problem who did not treat the problem permissively. These mothers were urged to try the permissive approach. Of the 50 mothers who were re-interviewed, 26 did not try the change. Of the 24 who did try, 16 rejected it after a few trials. 8 of the 50, adopted the behavior as their customary response to the children's food refusals. The analysis concentrated upon two major topics: the background of the mother's customary behavior, and the process of adoption of these 8 mothers who made the change. The theoretical setting is that of expectancy theory. Some signif relationships set forth between a number of factors and the behavior change were: prestige rating of doctors, relative satisfaction gained, degree of dominance characterizing the mother's child-rearing, encouragement received from husband, the actual results, etc. Implications of findings were, that careful analysis of motives is needed to properly assess the reward and satisfaction variables in this type of study. Other results and interpretations are presented. F. B. Silberstein.
