The influence of demographic composition & language on nationalist movements in contemporary Kazakhstan is studied. An overview of the affects of Soviet communism on Kazakhstan's demography & language is presented. In addition, the motivations & actions behind individuals who supported or opposed the ethnonationalist movements in post-Soviet Kazakhstan are discussed. It is contended that the Kazak nationalist movement has asserted that Kazaks possess a unique historic connection to the territory of Kazakhstan. Moreover, the Kazak nationalist movement's attempt to pass measures that will redistribute the national population to the advantage of ethnic Kazaks & support for the repatriation of Kazaks residing outside the republic are addressed. Additional attention is dedicated toward discussing the Kazak nationalist movement's rejection of the existence of two state languages & advocacy of language legislation that elevates the status of Kazak. The implications of increased migration from Kazakhstan's rural to urban regions for future nationalist policies are also considered.
