  • Two hypo's are formulated in regard to the length of life planning & the soc characteristics of the individual. It is 1st hypo'zed that some sub-cultural groups would value life planning more favorably than others. 2nd, 'that some individuals, by virtue of their status in society, are better able to foresee their future than are others'. The 2 hypo'zed factors contributing to length of life planning are, then, values & SS. The 2 factors are not held to be mutually exclusive. 2 sets of data are analyzed for the testing of the hypo's: (1) 2,700 questionnaires from a sampling of High Sch S's throughout the State of Connecticut, with specific responses to the Question: 'How far in advance have you planned your life?' (2) 349 Yale undergrad's in an introductory pol'al sci class, with responses to the same question. Analysis of the data yields a signif +r between length of life planning & (a) occup'al status of R's father, (b) educ'al status of R's father, & (c) with being male. A reliable -r was found to exist between length of life planning & age, but the relation was not independent of the characteristics of the sample. 'Protestantism & Catholicism showed no reliable diff in their relation to length of life planning when the effects of occup'al status were controlled. Signif'ly more Jews than either Protestants or Cath's had long range life plans.' In conclusion, the presence of both the value that life planning is good & the presence of a SS which makes the future predictable were found to be influential factors in the data. S. Shively.
