In his article, Bernhard Nett undertakes a review of G. Hyden's "No Shortcuts to Progress" two decades after its publication. The author points out that Hyden's invention of an African "uncaptured peasant" implied an innovative critique on the state-centered early development discourse & promoted a new interest in grassroot perspectives of African development. Putting African peasants into the center of African political economy, therefore, was a promising attempt (not only of Hyden). According to the author, Hyden's attempt failed due to its reduction of progress to the imitation of elder industrialization models. 23 References. Adapted from the source document.
