• The paper describes the emergence, development, & general profile of the contemporary sociology of tourism concluded from international research: (1) detailed sociohistorical analysis & evaluation of the development of this science in Europe & the US; (2) research of theoretical basis (ie, tourism & socioscientific background) of the sociology of tourism; & (3) research of borderlines between the sociology of tourism & other sociological disciplines such as social psychology & anthropology. Some specific characteristics are also explained: main authors, basic concepts, subject matter, & elements of institutionalization. The last part reviews Croatian sociology of tourism, which has constantly been developing. The author supports a multidisciplinary approach in tourism, thereby a sociological one, which is necessary (a) from the viewpoint of strategic development of Croatian tourism; (b) because of the fact that sociological research of tourism is closest to the marketing conception; (c) because of the changes in the economic system of Croatia; & (d) from the point of view of the sociology of tourism as a special sociological discipline that contributes to the understanding of tourism & the social context that determines it, develops & improves it, & enables the evaluation of its importance & consequences for other events that are changing within the relations & process of receptive & emitive society. 3 Tables, 1 Figure, 45 References.
