The article explores the notion of lifestyle as the form of performative construction of symbolic inequalities in contemporary societies. The author argues that to understand arbitrary aesthetic choices, empirical research should go beyond measuring the effects of cultural construction of class (practices & taste choices) & look for the ethical background of the "struggle for taste." This means, that we should be searching for a durable foundation of cultural choices, ie, the ethical habitus or interpretive community that make different cultural choices meaningful & predictive. In the second part of the article, the social geography of ethical habitus as a durable foundation of lifestyles is tested empirically with data from a survey of a national representative sample of 1,200 respondents. 1 Table, 30 References.
