Shustov profiles Georgii Kornienko. At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kornienko worked his way up from translator and consultant to first deputy foreign minister. His foreign assignment was comparatively brief: He worked in Washington in 1959-1964 first as counselor and then minister-counselor of the Soviet Embassy. He was fated to be directly involved in the Cold War. Knowing about the many nuances, twists and turns of this phenomenon, he wrote an excellent book 'Kholodnaia voina. Svidetel'sto ee uchastnika (The Cold war. Accounts of its Veteran).
