In the American "melting pot," Slovene immigrants sensed a need for collective identification. The theater was one medium through which they could define their cultural position vis-a-vis the main stream of American culture. The first performance was in 1900, when the Cleveland choral society "Sava" staged a play. This society was followed by others in PA, WI, IL, & elsewhere. In the 1920s, some theaters reached an enviable level, particularly "Ivan Cankar" & "Anton Verovsek" in Cleveland. 4 References. Adapted from the source document.
