Maines discusses four elements of his approach to scholarly work. (1) He acknowledges leaping from topic to topic & consistently working on several projects at the same time. (2) He contends that there is no "natural" interactionist subject matter & being a sociologist first encourages studying human group life from a broad perspective that allows investigation into arenas previously unexplored by interactionists, such as social organization, political economy, or stratification. (3) The generic problem of the "dialectical relations of freedom & constraint" has guided his scholarship on seemingly unrelated topics. (4) He admits that his "character flaw" of having the extreme distaste to be involved in a trend has manifested itself by the dropping of work-in-progress when others have begun examining the same issue. How the four essays in this special section address these elements are discussed, & an edited version of a speech presented to the National Communication Assoc in 1993 is included to reiterate convictions about the link between interactionism & communication.
