Three prisons in Bologna Italy and the work of the Poveri Prigionieri from the later 14th century through the early 16th century are examined, and the political context for changes initiated by Cristoforo Angelelli is considered. Local patricians used the resources, reputation and responsibilities of the cofraternal prison charity to strengthen their power.
