Comments on Johannes Han-Yin Chang's (2000) article analyzing social class transformations in late-20th-century People's Republic of China. Chang's theory merits praise for recognizing the empirical nature of the subject matter & for focusing on interpretive processes. Areas of further research include reform initiatives prior to 1978, investigating the extended economic conditions that made reforms attractive, the changing status & privileges that render class depictions provisional, the role of political elites in transformations, & ethnic stratification. Interactionist analyses of stratification are considered, suggesting that the field has not investigated the phenomenon of social stratification per se. 30 References. T. Noland
